Trauma

It is common to think that a traumatic event has to be something that is serious or severe, however, any event in your life has the potential to be traumatic such as...

  • Parents separation
  • Grief and loss from the death of a loved one including a pet
  • Serious illness or an accident
  • Intrusive medical procedures
  • Any form of abuse or family violence
  • Neglect as a child
  • Natural disasters
  • Being a witness to a violent act or accident

Healing

Trauma is subjective, an event may be experienced as traumatic for one person and not for another. This means there is no “right” or “wrong” way to think, feel, or respond to trauma. It is wrong to compare your reactions to those of other people. Your responses are NORMAL reactions to ABNORMAL events which mean healing from trauma is subjective.

About Me

I have degrees in counselling and theology and many years of experience working with victims of family violence, trauma, mental health issues, grief and loss. My counselling practice is trauma informed which means that I work from an understanding of how trauma impacts people’s lives. Childhood trauma has a negative effect on brain development, the inability to form healthy attachments or to emotionally self-regulate.

Glenn Duthie – Trauma Counselling

I believe that healing from trauma is possible and must include physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional wellbeingto create opportunities for you to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment without re-traumatisation. I am committed to and act upon the core principles of;

  • Safety: ensuring your physical and emotional safety
  • Trustworthiness: creating a trusting therapeutic relationship
  • Choice: maximising your choices and decision making
  • Collaboration: working together to find solutions that work for you
  • Empowerment: prioritising your social engagement and confidence

I value and respect all individuals, along with their choices, autonomy, culture and values, while building hope and optimism for a better future. I am amazed at people’s resilience and tenacity when faced with often desperate and seemingly hopeless situations. I am extremely privileged to hear people’s stories as I journey with them to discover hope and preferred ways of living and being.

Testimonials

Glenn Duthie – Trauma Counselling

"To our family's guardian angel. A huge thank you for your perseverance, faith in our family and for 'wanting' to help Izzy find her way out of her dark hole. Words just don't seem enough"

Glenn Duthie – Trauma Counselling

"A year ago, our son's life took a spin and he needed immediate support from a counsellor. I knew Glenn so called to get some advice and he was fantastic, he responded and arranged an urgent appointment that evening for my son and made further appointments as needed. Glenn's professional, respectful, gentle and empathetic attitude was really appreciated by us all and he maintained our son's confidentiality but also encouraged transparency so that as parents we felt empowered to try to support our son. We would not hesitate to recommend him as a trauma counsellor"
